Smallest Battery in The World will Put Power

Smallest Battery in The World – Researchers have built a battery that’s six times thinner than a bacterium. The microscopic power pack could be used to run all sorts of minuscule electronic devices, including sensors that spy on single cells.
Does this mean we’ll start seeing commercials for the Energizer bacterium? At 150 nanometers wide, the nano battery is hundreds of times thinner than a human hair and more than 60,000 times smaller than a AAA battery. How many “A”s is that?
The Smallest Battery in The World, developed at Rice University, is actually a cross between a battery and a supercapacitor. Supercapacitors can deliver more power at once than batteries–a bigger jolt. The diminutive battery is made by the thousands in dense arrays. Each battery is a nanowire, with one half of the wire working as a negative electrode and the other half as a positive electrode.
Arrays of these nano batteries could be used to power implantable medical devices, chemical and biological sensors, and microscopic wireless networks. They could also enable tiny embedded computers in all manner of devices, which could cause countless everyday objects to have “smart” added to their names. Smart toothbrush, anyone?
In addition, they could be combined with tiny energy-harvesting devices.
Smallest Battery in The World
The skinnier-than-a-bacterium battery is currently a lab prototype, which means all the details aren’t yet worked out. There’s still work to do to go from proof of concept to something you can put in a commercial product. For one thing, the battery’s performance tails off after recharging only 20 times. That doesn’t cut it, especially if you plan to put these in implantable devices. Replacing those little camera batteries is hard enough.

“The world without Linux might be a very different place. It’s one where computing is kind of crappy and homogeneous. You’re still using Windows CE on your crappy Windows cell phone. That world is grim and dark and Linux is a reason why that world doesn’t exist.
“It runs air traffic control, it runs your bank, and it runs nuclear submarines. Your life, money, and death is in Linux’s hands, so we can keep you alive, clean you out, or kill you. It’s incredible how important it is.”

Facts About Dragonflies

Facts About Dragonflies – A dragonfly is an insect belonging to the order Odonata, the suborder Epiprocta or, in the strict sense, the infraorder Anisoptera. Below you’ll find more interesting Facts About Dragonflies.
Facts About Dragonflies

Facts About Dragonflies

  • A dragonfly’s scientific name is Odonta, which comes from the words “tooth-jawed” because the entomologist (insect scientist), Johann Christian Fabricius, who named them studied the dragonflies’ mouths in order to distinguish the different species. Now their wings are studied as well to classify dragonflies. (fact – other names for dragonflies around the world are water dipper in England, old glassy in China, and the ancient Celts called dragonflies big needle of wings.)
  • From the time a dragonfly egg hatches, it can live anywhere from six months to six years, but only about two months as an actual dragonfly. (Facts About Dragonflies, most of the time spent is as a nymph in the water before the dragonfly’s metamorphosis into a full grown dragonfly.)
  • A dragonfly’s eyes have about 30,000 lenses and a dragonfly can see all the way around it, but they don’t see details very well. (fact, a human eye only has one lens and sees better than a dragonfly, but only to the front and side of them.)
  • There are about 5,000 different species of dragonflies all over the world except in Antarctica. 450 of the species can be found in the United States and about 80 species in British Columbia. (fact, most of the 5,000 species are found in remote, tropical areas.)
  • There were huge dinosaur dragonflies that lived 300 million years ago. (fact – the largest fossil found had a 2 ½ foot wingspan, and currently there are dragonflies in Costa Rica that measure 7 ½ inches across the wings.)
  • A dragonfly is a very strong and good flyer, and can fly at speeds of up to 36 miles per hour. (fact, but not all dragonflies are that fast – one was clocked at this speed in Australia)
  • A bee flaps its wings about 300 times per second, but a dragonfly flaps its wings at only about 30 beats per second. (Facts About Dragonflies, dragonflies have two sets of wings so they don’t have to beat them as much to fly.)

Facts About Giraffes

Facts About Giraffes – Their hearts weigh almost two stones, their necks grow to six feet and they communicate on an ultrasound level. Giraffes are one of the most unique species on earth. Below you’ll find more interesting Facts About Giraffes.

Facts About GiraffesFacts About Giraffes

  • There is only one species of giraffe, with nine subspecies recognised by their different patterns. Their name (Giraffa Camelopardalis) means ‘one who walks swiftly, a camel marked like a leopard’. Like camels, giraffes have a (small) hump on their backs and can go without drinking water for long periods due to their succulent diet of Acacia leaves, but this is where the similarity ends.
  • Facts About Giraffes – The tallest land mammals-giraffes are six feet tall at birth and males can grow up to 18 metres in height with a length of the neck of six meters. A baby giraffe (calf) fell head first to the ground from a height of about six metres at birth, which causes it to take its first big breath. Newborns are up and walking around after about one hour.
  • Giraffes are big hearted creatures – quite literally. They need their 26lb heart and high blood pressure to stop them fainting when they raise their heads from ground level.
  • Facts About Giraffes: Many cultures have honoured the giraffe. They have been depicted in African cave paintings and ancient Egyptian art. Whilst not hunted in large numbers, there is still some poaching. Giraffe tail hairs are used to make jewellery and hide is used to make sandals. The burning skin of a giraffe is used to treat nose-bleeds among some tribes.
  • Giraffes spend most of their day eating, needing up to 34 kilograms of food per day to fuel their massive size. They produce thick saliva which coats any thorns in preparation for swallowing. Adult giraffes are too large for most predators but the young can fall prey to lions, leopards and hyenas. Up to half of all giraffe calves never reach adulthood.

Female Frog Sings During Sex

Female Frog Sings During Sex – Many famous and not-so-famous singers claim to woo their mates with a tune or two during romantic encounters. It’s a tactic that often works.
While this behavior is well known among humans, it’s somewhat less common for amphibians, especially female frogs. But Kermit’s heart would probably go pitter pat if he encountered a female Emei music frog, since new research has just revealed these gals “sing” in very sexy ways while they mate.
Female Frog Sings During Sex
Female Frog Sings During Sex
Female Frog Sings During Sex – The rhythmic click calls of the females are so attractive to males that they move rhythmically back and forth whenever they hear these calls during mating, according to the researchers. It’s as though the males need the “singing” to help them get their groove on, and maintain it. The males also shut up, which is pretty unusual for this vocal species.
The study, accepted for publication in the journal Animal Behavior, reveals a new function for female frog mating calls. Previously it was thought that such calls mostly functioned as part of duets, helping the couple to stay in sync- as crickets and other insects do- during the mating process.
But the research team, led by Jianguo Cui of the Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, determined that the calls not only stimulated male mating, but that they also incited male-male competition.
It’s all good for the females, since they not only have the males fighting over them, but the fighting also helps the females to find mates in the first place. If she calls before mating begins and the males fight, she can then find them better in the dark, silt-filled ponds of China where these frogs live.
Once the romance starts, the researchers write that “Emei music frog males moved back and forth rhythmically during copulation instead of calling, while females produced calls in the intervals between male movements. This novel behavioral pattern has not been reported for any other anuran species to our knowledge.”
Moreover, when the researchers disturbed the action, by gently touching the male’s back, the female continued calling until the male was released and they could go at it again.
“These results show that, in Babina, female calling can stimulate male copulatory behaviors,” concludes the scientific team.
